Why Shared Interests Are Important When Dating

When dating someone new, it’s always good to have some shared interests.

You don’t need to be identical, you don’t have to love the exact same bands or TV shows, but having some shared interests can help the two of you start a relationship, and can help you understand each other on a deeper level.

Having common cultural touchstones helps you build a connection right away, and can continue to provide a strong foundation if things become serious down the line.

Why You Should Have Some Things In Common When Dating:

Having Shared Interests Gives You Something To Talk About When You First Start Dating

When you first match, if they haven’t filled in their bio, it can sometimes feel like the two of you have nothing to talk about.

On Badoo you can see people’s interests and hobbies listed on their profile. This will help you understand more about them, see if you have anything in common, and give you something to talk about

This can make those first conversations flow much easier. It doesn’t matter what you have in common, it can be something as simple as cooking, music, or movies, or be as niche as a favourite board game.

Whatever it is, it can help the two of you learn more about each other, and grow closer much faster.

As your relationship develops, your interests may change, but having that shared foundation is something that can’t be taken away.

You Can Share Your Passions Together

As your relationship grows, your interests can grow as well. Sharing them together can reinforce the intimacy you had at the start of the relationship, and might become a central part of your life together.

Sharing any hobby will bring the two of you closer together. Seeing your partner really engaged in something they enjoy and feel passionate about is inherently attractive, and that passion can often be carried over into other areas of the relationship.

If you’re already in a relationship and you don’t have any shared interests, you can always start new ones!

Hobbies For Couples:

Cooking

Cooking isn’t just a hobby, it’s also a life skill.

Learning how to cook your partner’s favourite food is one of the most romantic things you can do, and really shows you care.

The two of you can also learn to cook an entirely new type of cuisine that you may never have tried before.

You can find hundreds of new recipes online within minutes, so shake up your routine and try some new meals together.

A Sport

Taking up a sport or some kind of physical activity will make both of you healthier and happier.

It can be a team sport, or something more relaxed like yoga. As long as you pick something that you both find fun, it can be as intense or as gentle as you like.

Cycling, running, and hiking are good activities that you can do together, and invest as much or as little time, energy, and money into it as you want.

Learning A Language

If the two of you are planning a trip, it could be fun to learn the local language together.

You can quiz each other on vocab, plan a more authentic trip, and when you’re 100% legitimately and honestly fluent, you’ll end up with a new skill to put on your CV.

Of course, you don’t have to do everything together. It’s important to have some boundaries, to have some things the two of you keep separate. Having a healthy amount of space will stop the two of you spending too much time together, giving you time for yourself.

Ultimately only you can decide how important it is for your partner to share your interests or not. If you need to have a partner to go to the gym or to museums with, or if it doesn’t matter to you at all, it’s something to think about when you start dating someone new.
