Why Music Taste Matters When Dating

Music is one of the most personal and important elements of our lives. Intrinsically tied to memory, songs can transport us back in time. We all have songs that remind us of certain people or certain times in our lives.

So it's not surprising that music taste is one of the most important factors in overall compatibility when it comes to dating.

How Important Is Shared Music Taste When Dating?

Ever found out your date hated your favourite pop star, and instantly went off them? Turns out you're not alone. New research from Badoo reveals music is a relationship deal breaker. A staggering 70% of Brits believe a shared music taste is one of the most important qualities in a partner.

The study also found that one in five had lied about their music preference in order to impress their date. However, for those that fibbed, almost three quarters said their relationship had not gone well, suggesting how important it is to be upfront about your favourite band or singer. This also supports recent figures from Badoo that found 95% of UK singletons rate honesty as the most important quality in relationships.

A shared music taste was ranked more important than earning a lot of money (31 per cent), being highly educated (56 per cent) or having a great body (61 per cent). What’s more, music is so important to British daters, that on a date we’d prefer to go to a gig than a pub quiz, a fancy cocktail night or a theme park - a music event even trumps going for a cheeky Nando’s!

Dominic Gallello, CMO of Badoo commented: “Our study has given us further understanding of the all-important drivers Badoo users crave when looking for a meaningful connection online.”

Spice Girl Mel B said: “Music has always been a big part of my life so I can totally understand people saying it's a deal breaker for them when it comes to relationships. It’s the perfect way for us to make honest connections and get to know someone better. Recently, when I recorded Badoo’s podcast The Truth Flirts, I remember one famous guest telling a story of someone she was dating that went badly; they started playing music which wasn’t to her taste. Needless to say, the relationship didn’t last!”.
