Now that we can go outside (and into pubs) after months of isolation, some of us are making dating a priority.
Almost half of UK singles are now more eager to find a partner than they were before lockdown, having seen what life in isolation is like.
And since there are some signs a second wave may hit this winter, some of us are trying to couple up before having to bunker down.
We all knew dating was going to change after lockdown, but new research suggests it’s going to be much the same as it was before: people are looking to cuff.
What Is Cuffing?
Cuffing season is a well established trend where people try to get a partner just in time for winter, and then dump them so they can be single again in time for summer.
It looks like we’re seeing a new version of this, with people anxious to find someone before we all have to quarantine again.
Why We’re All Desperate To Find Someone In Case A Second Wave Hits:
Lockdown Is Lonely
There’s no getting away from it: lockdown can be lonely, and some people don’t want a repeat of the last few months trapped in a house on their own if they can avoid it.
Almost half of us admitted to feeling jealous of friends in relationships during lockdown, and now that we’ve got the chance to find someone, we want to make that time count.
We’ve Realised We’re Ready For A Partner
Time spent in isolation has also meant more of us have been able to think about what’s really important, and what we really want.
Over half of our respondents in this survey said they were now looking for a relationship, instead of a short-term fling or hookup.
What’s more, almost a quarter of those we interviewed expected to have a partner by now. Lockdown derailed their plans, forcing them to give up on romance. Having spent months of time inside, unable to meet new people, they’re eager to make up for lost time.
But while most of us want a partner, none of us want to be cuffed. We don’t want to end up in an average relationship just to avoid being alone, we want to be in a great relationship that lasts beyond lockdown.
So how can you avoid being cuffed, and make sure you get the real thing?
How To Avoid Being Cuffed:
Be Clear About What You Want
On your dating app profile as well as on any dates you might go on, you need to be clear about what you’re looking for.
If you want a relationship, say so, and see how your date reacts.
Build A Genuine Connection
Avoid surface level conversation and ask questions that will help you get to know the other person at a more intimate level.
For example, you could ask what their best and worst part of lockdown has been, which will help you get a sense of who they are, how they spend their time, and what they value. Does this match up with you?
Don’t Let Your Time Be Wasted
Don’t settle for anything less than what you really want. Loneliness is tough, but it’s ultimately worse to be in a relationship that isn’t going anywhere or doesn’t mean anything to you.
Remember to be honest about what you want, and you’ll be sure to find it.
