So, you've matched with someone on Badoo – and things are going well. You're exchanging great messages, the chats become a little deeper, and you're even thinking of meeting up soon. That's great! At Badoo, we want you to stay safe while having fun, both whilst talking on the app and meeting up IRL. Read on for our tips on how to make the most of online dating, while keeping safety top of mind.
When you're talking online
There's nothing quite like coming across someone you really connect with when you're online dating. It can take a few tries to find someone you have great chemistry with, but when it happens, it's exciting. While it's easy to get swept up in the moment and assume that everything the other person says is golden, there are a couple of key steps you can take to help you stay safer while dating online.
1. Set up a video call
This is the easiest way to make sure your match is who they say they are. Plus, it's a great way to break the ice and get to know each other a little better before you consider meeting up in person.
2. Check out their social media
Who hasn't had a quick Instagram search of someone they're chatting to online? We all do it. Aside from satisfying your curiosity, playing detective allows you to do your research and spot anything that could be suspicious. Not everyone has social media, and that's OK – but if there's truly no trace of them online, refer back to step one before you make any plans to meet up.
3. Look out for red flags
A red flag in dating is something that the other person says or does that sets off alarm bells. An example of a red flag could be love bombing – showering you with excessive attention, affirmations of love, or compliments from the start. Some other examples of red flags are your match asking you for money, repeatedly declining video calls, or saying something that makes you feel scared or unsafe. If any red flags appear – politely communicate that you don't want things to go any further and end contact. You can also report suspicious behavior on Badoo and unmatch and block anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable.
When you're planning a date
So, you've completed the steps above and you're talking about meeting up for a date. What now?
1. Choose an activity you're both comfortable with
Remember, this is your date too – you have every right to speak up about what you want to do on it, and communicate any non-negotiables ahead of time. For example, you could say that you're looking forward to meeting the other person, but you're not up for going to their place. Picking a public place for a first date is a good idea. If anything feels off, you can always ask people around you or staff for help.
2. Tell someone your plans
When you have the details locked in, make sure to tell someone you trust what you and your date are planning. Let friends or family know where you're going, what time, and who you're meeting. You could also make use of location sharing services, and remember to let your trusted contact know when you're home.
Staying safe on the date
The day has arrived! You've got your best outfit on, butterflies in your stomach, and you're ready to go. Here's how to keep yourself safe on the date:
1. Make your own way there
It's a good idea to organize your own transportation to and from your date – that way, you don't need to give the other person your address, and you can leave when you want to.
2. Keep your personal items safe
Keep your phone, keys and wallet within reach. Make sure your phone is on and fully charged (and if you can, bring a portable charger). If you grab a drink on your date, make sure to keep a close eye on it.
3. Not going well? Make your excuses and leave
Sometimes, we just don't gel as well with people in real life as well as we imagined. It's a totally normal part of dating. If you find that your date isn't going well, you're under absolutely no obligation to stay. Politely let the person know it's time for you to leave, and don't feel bad for cutting the date short.
If your date did or said something that crossed a line or made you feel scared or unsafe, you can report the person you met in the Badoo app. Guidance for blocking and reporting someone can be found here. If you'd like to reach out to us with safety concerns, you can do so here and one of our dedicated moderators will review your situation and take appropriate action.
Dating should be enjoyable, and while it's totally normal to feel a little nervous or awkward, you should never feel unsafe. Applying these safety tips when dating someone new will help you prepare, stay safe, and leave more room to focus on the fun.
