New Year, Same Unwanted Dating Advice

New Year brings with it Veganuary, unrealistic new year's resolutions, ANOTHER lockdown, and an onslaught of patronising dating advice for single people. In a study we carried out, 2 in 3 people said they find being single in the new year period even harder than at other times of the year. At Badoo, we found a huge 70% of singles find it annoying when family or friends try to give them dating advice, with friends (31%), parents (18%) and work colleagues found most guilty of dishing out unwanted advice.

The top 10 list of cliché and unwanted dating advice we found:

  1. “Don’t worry you’ll find someone eventually, I’m sure of it”
  2. “You need to get out there more, the clock is ticking”
  3. “When you stop looking, the right person will come along”
  4. “Have you found a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?”
  5. “There’s plenty more fish in the sea”
  6. “It’s time you settled down”
  7. “You need to be a bit less picky...”
  8. “In my day, you were married by 25...”
  9. “There must be hundreds of people on dating apps - just be more open”
  10. “2021 is going to be your year, I just know it”

Whether it's a family member or your uber driver, hearing the same old tired dating clichés takes its toll. As the dating app that cuts through the crap and encourages you to be your honest self, we want to shine a light on the unwwanted dating advice thousands of singles are receiving in a notoriously depressing and tricky month....and remind you why you SO don’t need to listen to it. We called on our friend and comedy legend Sideman to call bullshit on the most common (and crap) dating advice we’ve been given. Have a look at his hilarious video below:

Lockdown has meant the old dating rulebook has been well and truly thrown out the window – and we high-key wish that all this unwanted advice would go with it. As Sideman says, a lot of this advice encourages us to not be ourselves, which is why it's so annoying. At Badoo, we champion dating honestly – we don't want to waste time being anything but our own, great selves. Let's say goodbye to these tired clichés, and continue dating on our own terms – we've got this!
